Mixer is a now-defunct video gaming live-streaming platform that was initially launched back on January 5th, 2016 as Beam under the ownership of co-founders Matthew Salsamendi and James Boehm.
Microsoft acquired the platform in August 2016 and renamed it Mixer in 2017 while also integrating it into Microsoft’s Xbox division, which came with top-level integration on Xbox One.
Microsoft pushed heavily into Mixer in 2019 when they signed two of the top streamers from their main competitor Twitch, Ninja and Shroud to an exclusive contract with the company. Despite the efforts, Mixer could not sustain growth.
Microsoft announced on June 22nd, 2020, that Mixer would be shut down by the end of July 22nd, with a deal in place that would see the brand acquired by Facebook to be merged with their Facebook Gaming section.
